Combo Brows have become the go-to eyebrow PMU technique for clients who want hair-stroke realism with the longevity and density of powder shading. Sunny Permanent Makeup, a master-led studio in Hongdae (Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea) at 30 Dongmak-ro 8-gil, performs Combo Brows as one of its signature services. This guide explains what the technique is, who it suits, what the session and healing look like, and how to plan a Combo Brows appointment as an international visitor.

Quick Answer: Combo Brows at Sunny Permanent Makeup combine machine-driven hair-stroke detail at the front of the brow with soft powder shading through the body and tail, producing a natural-yet-defined finish that lasts 1 to 3 years on most skin types. Performed by master artist Sunny Kwak (35,000+ case portfolio · WULOP Korea 2024 Judge) at the Hongdae studio. Individual results may vary.

What Are Combo Brows, Exactly?

Combo Brows are a hybrid semi-permanent eyebrow technique that combines two distinct PMU methods in a single brow design.

The front of the brow (the area closest to the nose) is created with fine hair-stroke pigment placement — usually done with an ultra-thin machine needle so that each stroke mimics a natural brow hair growing in the same direction. The body and tail of the brow are then built up with soft powder shading, applied with a stippling or pixelated technique that adds density and definition without looking solid.

The result is a brow that reads as natural at the front and as defined at the tail — closer to a "filled-in" look than pure microblading, but without the drawn-on quality of a full powder brow. The technique is sometimes called Combination Brows or Hybrid Brows; all three terms describe the same approach.

Why Combo Brows Are a Signature Technique at Sunny Permanent Makeup

Combo Brows are technically more demanding than microblading or powder brows alone, which is why studios with stronger artist credentials tend to specialize in them.

Sunny Permanent Makeup is led by master artist Sunny Kwak (Sunae Kwak / 곽선애), who brings 15+ years of PMU experience and a verified 35,000+ case portfolio to every Combo Brows session. Sunny served as a WULOP Korea 2024 judge and is K-Beauty Master Faculty — credentials earned through industry recognition, not self-claim. She is also the founder of her own PMU pigment brand and runs a brow education program training Korean PMU artists.

For Combo Brows specifically, this matters because the technique requires the artist to coordinate two different needle configurations and two pigment depositions within the same brow during the same session — a level of multi-technique control that comes from high case volume and continued teaching practice. Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals industry standards documents combination techniques as among the more advanced PMU procedures.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Combo Brows?

Combo Brows work for a broader range of clients than microblading alone, but they are not a universal answer.

Good candidates for Combo Brows at Sunny:

  • Clients with normal-to-oily skin types who want longer pigment retention than microblading typically delivers

  • Clients with sparse, fine, or over-plucked brows who need shading to create density that hair-strokes alone cannot

  • Clients who want a defined "filled-in" brow during the day without applying pencil or pomade

  • Clients with existing faded or unevenly healed PMU work who want correction with a hybrid technique

Not ideal for:

  • Clients with very dry, thin, or compromised skin barriers — the shading layer may settle unpredictably

  • Clients currently using topical retinoids or strong exfoliating acids on the brow area (must discontinue 7+ days before)

  • Clients with active dermatological conditions (eczema, psoriasis, recent breakouts) on or around the brow

  • Clients within 6 months of isotretinoin (Accutane) treatment

What Does the Procedure Feel Like at Sunny?

A Combo Brows session at Sunny Permanent Makeup runs approximately 2 to 2.5 hours from consultation to completion.

The first 20 to 30 minutes are spent on brow mapping and design — measuring facial proportions, discussing color undertone, and pre-drawing the proposed shape for client approval. Brow mapping is done case by case, never from a template. Once the design is confirmed, topical numbing cream is applied for 15 to 20 minutes before pigment work begins.

Most clients describe the sensation during the hair-stroke phase as a light scratching or vibration, and the shading phase as a softer tapping. Discomfort levels vary by skin sensitivity and the brow area being treated — the tail tends to be slightly more reactive than the body. Pigments used at Sunny are SGS-certified and comply with cosmetic ingredient standards overseen by the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety cosmetic regulations. All tools are single-use and sterile.

How Does Combo Brows Healing Work Day by Day?

Healing follows a predictable pattern that surprises most first-time PMU clients because the brow color appears to change dramatically over 4 to 6 weeks before settling.

Day 0–1. The brows look bold and slightly swollen. Color appears most saturated due to oxidation and inflammation. Tenderness is mild but present.

Day 2–4 (Dark Phase). Color deepens noticeably — often 150 to 200% darker than the final result. This is the most common phase clients worry about; it is also the most normal. Light scabbing may begin at the edges.

Day 5–10 (Peeling Phase). Surface pigment naturally sheds with the dead skin layer. Do not pick or peel — this is the most common cause of patchy healing.

Day 10–14 (Ghost Phase). The brows often look much lighter than expected, sometimes alarmingly so. This is normal: new epidermis has formed a milky film over deeper pigment that is still healing in place.

Week 4–6. Final color settles at roughly 60 to 70% of the immediate post-procedure intensity. This is the result that the touch-up session is designed against. General dermatologist-reviewed skin care guidance for healing pigmented skin is published by the American Academy of Dermatology guidance on caring for tattooed skin.

How Long Do Combo Brows Last?

Combo Brows at Sunny typically last 1 to 3 years before requiring a refresh, with most clients returning between months 18 and 24 for color refresh. The hybrid technique generally retains color longer than pure microblading because the powder shading layer compensates for natural pigment fade over time.

Retention varies by skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Oily skin tends to push pigment slightly faster than dry skin. Daily sun exposure without SPF protection accelerates fade significantly. Touch-ups are scheduled 4 to 8 weeks after the initial session to balance any uneven areas that settle differently during healing.

Combo Brows at Sunny — Frequently Asked Questions

How are Combo Brows different from microblading?

Microblading uses a manual hand-held blade to create hair-strokes only, with no shading. Combo Brows use a machine for both hair-strokes (at the front) and powder shading (through the body and tail). The combination produces more dimension and tends to last longer, especially on oily skin types where microblading alone often fades faster.

Are Combo Brows good for oily skin?

Yes — the powder shading component holds pigment more reliably on oily skin than pure hair-stroke techniques. Microblading often disappoints oily-skin clients within 6 to 12 months; Combo Brows tend to retain through the 18-to-24-month window even on oilier skin profiles.

How soon after Combo Brows can I fly home?

Most international visitors fly home 24 to 48 hours after the session without issue. Bring a hat or sunglasses for the airport, request a window seat to reduce eye contact during peak Day 1–2 swelling, and avoid touching the brow area during the flight. Hydrate well and keep the cabin air from drying the area excessively.

Do Combo Brows hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as light scratching or vibration during hair-stroke placement and softer tapping during shading. Topical numbing is applied before work begins, and the tail of the brow is the most reactive area. Discomfort is comfortable for the vast majority of clients; individual experiences vary.

Can I get Combo Brows over old, faded PMU work?

Often yes, but it depends on the existing color, density, and depth of the previous work. During consultation, Sunny will assess whether direct correction is possible, whether color correction is needed first, or whether removal sessions should precede new Combo Brows. Photos shared via Instagram DM before the consultation help with this assessment.
