Before and after healed eyebrow PMU result at Sunny Permanent Makeup in Hongdae Seoul

If you are getting semi-permanent makeup during a trip to South Korea, the fourteen days after your session matter as much as the two hours in the chair. Sunny Permanent Makeup is a master-led studio in the Hongdae area of Mapo-gu, Seoul, a ten-minute walk from Sangsu and Hapjeong Stations, and a large share of its clients are international visitors who heal on the move — in hotel rooms, on sightseeing days, and on flights home. Aftercare is the part of PMU that no artist can do for you.

This guide covers the rules themselves: what to do, what to avoid, and when each restriction lifts. If you want to know what your brows or lips will look like on any given day, read the PMU healing journey day by day guide instead — that post describes what the skin does, while this one describes what you do.

Quick Answer: PMU aftercare comes down to five windows: Hours 0–24 — blot lymph fluid every few hours, otherwise keep the area dry and sleep on your back. Days 1–3 — cleanse around the area, never soak it, apply a thin layer of the ointment given to you. Days 4–7 — do not pick, scratch, or help the flaking along. Days 7–14 — no makeup, no actives, no sweat sessions over the treated area. Weeks 4–6 — return for the retouch that sets the final result. Individual results may vary.

What Does PMU Aftercare Actually Involve?

PMU aftercare is the set of things you deliberately do and avoid while the treated skin closes, and it is separate from the healing timeline itself. Healing is passive — it happens whether you cooperate or not. Aftercare is the part you control, and it is the single largest variable in how much pigment survives the first month.

The reason is mechanical. Pigment is deposited in the upper dermis, and for roughly the first week a thin crust sits over it while the epidermis rebuilds. Anything that softens, floods, abrades, or swells that crust before it is ready lifts pigment out along with it. Professional bodies such as the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals industry guidelines treat aftercare instruction as part of the standard of practice, which is why the rules below apply to brow, lip, and eyeliner work alike.

The First 48 Hours: What to Avoid and What Is Safe

The first forty-eight hours are the strictest window, because the surface is still open and lymph fluid is still rising. Everything in this section is about keeping that surface clean, dry, and untouched.

Avoid during the first 48 hours:

  • Rinsing, soaking, or letting shower water run directly over the treated area.

  • Sleeping face-down or on the side of a treated brow or eyeliner.

  • Touching the area with unwashed hands, including checking it in the mirror.

  • Alcohol, heavy caffeine, and blood-thinning supplements, which increase lymph fluid and swelling.

  • Any product not given to you by your artist, including your usual moisturiser.

Safe to do during the first 48 hours:

  • Blotting the area gently with clean, dry gauze every two to three hours on day one.

  • Applying a rice-grain amount of the aftercare ointment provided, using a cotton swab rather than fingers.

  • Washing the rest of your face carefully, working around the treated area.

  • Sleeping on your back, propped slightly higher than usual to reduce swelling.

  • Walking, sightseeing, and eating normally.

How Do You Wash Your Face and Shower With Healing PMU?

You wash around healing PMU, not over it, for the first seven days. Here is the specific method.

For the face, put a small amount of a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser on your fingertips and clean only the areas outside the treated zone. Rinse with a damp cotton pad rather than cupped handfuls of water, and pat dry with a clean towel. Never rub, and never use a cleansing brush, konjac sponge, or micellar pad near the site.

For showers, keep the water warm rather than hot and stand with your back to the spray. Steam is the hidden problem in a small Korean bathroom, so keep showers short and leave the door open where you can. If the area does get splashed, blot it dry immediately — it is a setback, not a disaster.

Lip PMU has one extra rule: drink through a straw for the first three days, and rinse your mouth with water after every meal so food residue never sits on the healing border.

Can You Sweat, Exercise, or Visit a Jjimjilbang While Healing?

Heavy sweating is off the table for the first ten days, and heat-based facilities are off the table for fourteen. Sweat is salty and continuous, and it dissolves the crust from underneath in a way a single splash of water does not.

That rules out the jjimjilbang and its hot rooms, public bathhouses, hotel saunas and steam rooms, swimming pools, the beach, hot yoga, and running or lifting hard enough to sweat through a shirt. In a Seoul summer, when humidity alone can raise a sweat on the walk from the subway, plan air-conditioned days for the first week.

Light activity is fine from day one. Walking, museums, shopping, cafes, and ordinary sightseeing pose no risk at all. If a jjimjilbang was on your Seoul list, move it to the back half of your trip.

When Can You Wear Makeup, Sunscreen, and Skincare Actives Again?

Nothing goes on top of the treated area until the flaking has finished on its own, which is usually day ten to fourteen. The table below is the practical version of that rule.

Product or activity

Earliest safe timing

Gentle cleanser around, not on, the area

Day 1

Aftercare ointment provided by the studio

As directed, days 1–7

Sunscreen over the treated area

Day 10–14, once the surface has fully closed

Foundation, concealer, or brow makeup over the area

Day 10–14

Mascara and eye makeup after eyeliner PMU

Day 10–14

Lipstick and scented lip balm after lip PMU

Day 10–14

Retinoids, AHA, BHA, or vitamin C near the area

Week 4

Facials, peels, or laser near the area

Week 6, after the retouch

Sunscreen deserves its own note. Once the surface has closed, daily SPF over the treated area is the highest-value long-term habit you have, because ultraviolet exposure is the main driver of premature fading and colour shift.

Aftercare While Traveling: Flights, Hotels, and Sightseeing Days

Healing PMU on a trip is entirely workable, but it changes how you sequence your days. The table below is what to plan around.

Logistics factor

Detail

Best time to book within a trip

Day 1 or 2, so redness settles before photo-heavy days

Days to keep light after the session

2 full days

Long-haul flight

Comfortable from day 3; possible earlier with precautions

Cabin air

Very dry — blot, do not moisturise the area mid-flight

Off-limits for 10–14 days

Jjimjilbang, pools, saunas, beaches, hot yoga, facials

Retouch timing

4–8 weeks later, on a return trip or a second Seoul leg

Carry the aftercare ointment and clean gauze in your day bag rather than leaving them at the hotel, and wear a wide-brimmed hat instead of applying sunscreen to a surface that has not closed yet.

If you are combining several areas in one visit, the multi-area PMU one-visit combination protocol explains how the restrictions stack, and the pre-arrival booking guide for international visitors covers what to send before you land.

What Happens If Aftercare Goes Wrong?

Most aftercare mistakes cost you pigment, not safety. Getting the area wet once, sleeping on a brow, or breaking a sweat on day six typically shows up as a patchy section that the retouch at four to six weeks can fill in. That retouch exists partly for this reason.

Picking is the exception. Pulling a flake off early removes the pigment under it and can leave a pale gap that a single retouch may not fully close. If the area itches — and it will around days four to seven — press lightly through clean gauze instead of scratching.

A small number of situations are medical rather than cosmetic. Spreading redness, heat, swelling that worsens after day three, yellow or green discharge, or a fever are signs to see a physician promptly rather than wait for your next appointment. Patient guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology on tattoo skin care and the peer-reviewed dermatology reference on tattoo-associated skin reactions both describe what warrants clinical review, and neither this article nor your artist replaces that assessment.

Do the Rules Change for Brows, Lips, Eyeliner, and Hairline?

The core fourteen-day rules are the same for every area, with a few additions per site.

  • Eyebrow PMU is the most straightforward: the main risks are sweat, hats pressed against the brow line, and side-sleeping.

  • Lip PMU is the most demanding, because eating, drinking, and speaking all move the healing surface. Expect a straw, bland food, and no spice or citrus for three days — see the Korean lip blushing guide for the full picture.

  • Eyeliner PMU adds swelling on the first morning and a strict no-mascara, no-lash-curler, no-contact-lens rule for the first few days, covered in the Korean semi-permanent eyeliner guide.

  • Hairline PMU sits under hair, so the additions are no hair dye, no perming, and shampooing around the area for the first week, as set out in the hairline PMU complete guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shower after permanent makeup?

Yes, from the first evening, as long as the treated area stays out of the direct spray. Keep the water warm rather than hot, keep it short to limit steam, and blot dry straight away if it gets splashed.

What happens if my PMU gets wet by accident?

One accidental splash, blotted dry immediately, usually causes nothing. Repeated soaking is the real problem, because it softens the crust and lifts pigment with it. Dry the area and carry on with the normal routine.

How long after PMU can I wear makeup?

Day ten to fourteen, once all flaking has finished on its own. Makeup applied over an unhealed surface introduces bacteria and pulls at the crust, and both cost retention.

Can I sleep on my face after microblading?

Not for the first week. Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised, which also reduces morning swelling. A travel pillow helps stop you rolling over in a hotel bed.

Is it normal for healing PMU to itch?

Yes, itching around days four to seven is a normal part of the flaking phase. Press gently through clean gauze rather than scratching, and never peel a flake that has not released on its own.

Can I drink alcohol or coffee after PMU?

Both are best avoided for the first 24 to 48 hours, because they increase lymph fluid and swelling while the surface is still open. After that, normal habits are fine.
